French comedian pens letter to Erdoğan for political asylum in Turkey

A French comedian convicted of hate speech has penned an open letter to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan asking the leader for political asylum in Turkey, state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Monday.

Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, known for his anti-Semitic views, said he no longer felt safe in France, “where his physical entity and life were under threat.’’

The comedian also praised the Turkish people for the hospitality he received during recent visits.

“I would like to be accepted to Turkey and apply for political asylum so as to settle there and live in peace,’’Anadolu cited the comedian as saying.

The 55-year-old comedian has been convicted of hate speech, advocating terrorism, and slanderin Belgium and in France.

In 2017, Dieudonné was sentenced to two months of jail time over anti-Semitic remarks made in a performance and his shows have been banned in several French cities.

Last year, Dieudonné wasbanned from YouTube,Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok.
