Turkey’s economic growth must create employment, nationalists say

Turkey’s economic growth must create employment, said the Nationalist Action Party (MHP), which supports the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

It is important to ensure that growth in the economy is of the right quality and boosts jobs, said Emin Haluk Ayhan, a deputy head of the MHP, according to Dünya newspaper.

The MHP is a key backer of Erdoğan and his new presidential system of government, introduced in June 2018 following a nationwide referendum. Erdoğan has tightened his political grip on the country and adopted a more hard-line stance on the Kurdish issue, foreign policy and human rights, strengthening his alliance with the nationalists.

Economic recovery will be felt more strongly next year, Ayhan said after official data on Monday showed that the economy grew by 0.9 percent in the third quarter, the first annual expansion this year. Turkey’s economic output has contracted after a currency crisis erupted in August last year, pummelling domestic demand and leading to a surge in unemployment.

Economic indicators show that growth will gain momentum in the fourth quarter, Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said in comments on Twitter. The government will focus on value-added production, speed up investments and strengthen industries that create employment, he said.

Unemployment in Turkey rose to 14 percent in the three months to September, the Turkish Statistical Institute said on Nov. 15. The number of young people without a job and not in education stood at 30.1 percent, it said.
