Azerbaijan says it gains ground in Nagorno-Karabakh, destroys Armenian weapons

The Azeri defence ministry said on Wednesday that Azerbaijan had made territorial gains in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in the deadliest fighting to hit the region since the 1990s.

The Azeri army captured Armenian positions in military operations "in the direction of Aghdere, Fizuli, Jabrayil, and Gubadli directions of the front," the ministry said.

Three artillery pieces, several mortars, and three vehicles with military personnel were destroyed in the fighting, it said.

The latest fighting that began on Sept. 27 has involved heavy artillery, rockets and drones, killing hundreds in the largest escalation of hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan in more than a quarter-century.

A second attempt at a truce agreed on Saturday has had little impact on fighting, despite concerns that the fight could erupt into an all-out war involving Russia and Turkey.
