Greek government rejects reports of Turkey-based migrants carrying COVID-19

Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis rejected on Monday reports saying that migrants gathered on Turkey’s coast to cross over to Greece carry the novel coronavirus, Kathimerini reported.

“Some migrants have gathered on the Turkish coast without any confirmation, however, as the Greek newspapers have written, that they are carriers of coronavirus,” Mitarakis said.

The minister said the Greek authorities would do everything possible to prevent any migrant crossings, but any migrants that do arrive on the Greek islands will be put under quarantine for 14 days.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced in February that Turkey would allow migrants to freely pass the Turkish side of the border toward Europe, after dozens of Turkish soldiers were killed in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib.
