Mesut Özil signs with Turkey’s Fenerbahçe - report

Turkish-German midfielder Mesut Özil has signed a deal with Turkish Fenerbahçe, ending his almost eight year tenure at Arsenal, NTV sports reported on Saturday.

The 32-year-old reached an agreement in principle with Arsenal to terminate his contract, NTV said, allowing to join the Istanbul club on a free transfer.

The deal, which will see the winner at Fenerbahçe for three-and-a-half years, follows months of speculationabout the footballer’s non-inclusion on the Arsenal roster.

The World Cup winner supported Fenerbahçe as a child and the wrote on Twitter that the United States and Turkey were the "two countries I want to play football in before I retire."

The footballer made headlines before the 2018 World Cup when he was pictured with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a move that came under intense criticism in Germany and set off a chain of events culminating in the Özil calling an end to his international football career.

The Arsenal player said "racism and disrespect" over his Turkish roots led him to make the call.
