Turkey spent $7.1 million on Istanbul election rerun

The rerun of the Istanbul mayoral election in June cost 41 million lira ($7.1 million), the left-wing Evrensel newspaper quoted the Supreme Election Council as saying.

The council ordered the election rerun after the Islamist ruling party said irregularities had led to the main opposition candidate, Ekrem İmamoğlu, being declared winner of the first vote on March 31.  İmamoğlu went on to win the June 23 vote by an even greater margin, the first time the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its predecessors had lost control of the city for 25 years.
