Some 2000 Syrian soldiers deployed near rebel-held Idlib - Turkish-backed fighters

Around 2,000 Syrian soldiers have been deployed strategic positions near Syria's last rebel-held province of Idlib, state-run Anadolu news agency said on Tuesday, citing Turkish-backed fighters on the ground.

Several tanks, artillery, mortars and anti-aircraft weapons have also been sent alongside the Syrian troops, Anadolu said.

The Syrian government launched an offensive in April 2019 to recapture Idlib from rebel groups and Islamist militias. Turkey deployed its military force into the war-torn country and backed opposition forces to try and halt the Syrian army's advance, which has displaced around 1 million people in the province.

Turkey and Russia brokered a ceasefire agreement on March 5 to end the fighting in the province between Turkish-backed forces and the Syrian military, which is backed by Russia.
