Turkey fined over 50 million dollars for ECHR violation under AKP rule

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has fined the Turkish government in the last 16 years over $50 million in total, left-leaning daily Birgün reported on Sunday, citing a report by Turkey's Ministry of Justice.

The ECHR ruled that Turkey violated the European Convention on Human Rights 2,840 times in the last 16 years and fined the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which assumed the office in 2002, $51.2 million, Birgün said.

Turkey, despite joining the convention in 1989, is the country most rulings of violations have been issued for since ECHR's foundation in 1959, with 3128 judgments involved the violation of at least one article of the convention, according to Birgün.

"Right to a fair trial, right to freedom and security and the right to freedom of speech are the most violated rights," Birgün quoted main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Alpay Antmen as saying.
