Turkey says Greece abandons asylum seekers on uninhabited island

Greece abandoned a group of refugees on an uninhabited Turkish island, Turkey’s Defence Ministry said citing drone footage.

The Turkish coast guard rescued the asylum seekers after a Greek LS-134 patrol boat left them on the island of Başak without food or other means of survival, the ministry said in a statement on Twitter on Sunday. Başak is located next to Turkey’s southern tourist town of Kaş.

Turkey recorded the incident with drones assisting with efforts to stamp out wildfires in the country, the ministry said.

Historical ties between Greece and Turkey are fraught with tensions over competing claims to territories in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Relations have worsened over how to handle refugee flows through Turkey, with both countries accusing the other of breaking international rules and agreements on asylum seekers.
