Greek court acquits nine Turkish nationals over terror-related offences

A Greek court on Wednesday ruled in favour of acquitting nine Turkish nationals arrested over terrorism-related offences, Reuters reported.

Eight men and one woman, who are reportedly members of the outlawed far-left Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), were detained in Athens in 2017, days before Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Greece.

The detainees had denied any wrongdoing, and prosecutors had suggested they should be acquitted, Reuters said.

Relations between Athens and Ankara have been strained since a failed coup attempt, which Turkey says was masterminded by the Gülen movement, a religious group.

Greek courts have refused Turkey’s extradition requests for eight Turkish servicemen accused of links to Gülen who fled to Greece in the aftermath of the coup attempt, while many members of the group also found shelter in Greece in order to avoid persecution in Turkey.
