Turkish court approves jail sentence for actor in domestic violence case
A Turkish appeals court has approved a jail sentence for actor Ahmet Kural on domestic violence charges, Diken news site reported on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old actor was first handed down a suspended prison term in April, 2019 for assaulting his then-girlfriend, pop singer Sıla Gençoğlu. Gençoğlu, appealed the verdict.
Kural was handed down another suspended jail term in July 2021, which was again appealed by Sıla’s lawyers.
The Istanbul court on Tuesday approved a one-year and 20-day sentence for Kural, Diken said, on charges of “insulting, threatening and deliberate injury.’’
Gencoglu, more commonly known by her first name in Turkey, is a singer and songwriter who has topped the country’s pop charts for more than 10 years.
The domestic violence case involving Kural sparked a national debate about violence against women in the country, Three hundred femicides were reported in 2020, according to the We Will Stop Femicides organisation.
Another 171 women were found dead under suspicious circumstances in the country last year, the organisation says, with some of those cases included alleged suicides.
