Turkey seizes 4 tonnes of bootleg alcohol

Turkish authorities have confiscated more than four tonnes of bootleg alcohol in the northwestern Tekirdağ and western Manisa provinces, state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday, citing security sources.

They detained two people for producing counterfeit booze, each in a separate operation, Anadolu said. Gendarmerie forces captured 3,365 litres of bootleg alcohol in a house in the Yunusemre district of Manisa, while some 550 litres were confiscated in the Marmara Ereğlisi district of Tekirdağ.

Rising alcohol prices in Turkey, caused largely by higher taxes, have pushed Turks to produce and consume more counterfeit spirits in recent years. This has caused a rise in alcohol poisoning cases as more people turned to black market alternatives.
